Art
The Art curriculum at Judd aims to equip students with a set of 2D and 3D practical skills, alongside specialist Art vocabulary, enabling learners to engage with the practice of making Art. As well as making Art, our students learn how to engage critically with the visual culture that surrounds them in their everyday lives, understanding both historical and contemporary contexts in which Art is/was made.
The intentions of the Art curriculum are:
- For students to develop fluent understanding of how to employ the formal elements of Art and principles of design as visual devices in the development of effective artworks ('Form')
- For students to develop the technical skills, and knowledge of techniques, to visually realise their intentions in a range of specialist media ('Process')
- For students to understand and experience a range of approaches to making artworks, ranging from traditional realism to the stylised and/or abstract construction of a work of Art ('Approach')
- For students to develop artworks whose subject matter falls within a range of different Art genres, including still life, landscape, figurative and others ('Content')
- For students to understand the power of images in visual culture, contextualising their work in the present day, whilst acknowledging the rich timeline of Art History that has gone before ('Context')
- For students to develop the emotional and intellectual capability to create artworks which express their personal, political, religious and/or socio-political viewpoints ('Concept')
The six components above (Form, Process, Approach, Content, Context, Concept) are our Threshold Concepts, and each stage of our curriculum builds learners' knowledge and skills in these areas in a structured, sequential way.
