Jana, Elena, Orson, Akshith and Daniel came second in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. The competition is open to all young people from the UK aged 16-25 and requires teams to come up with an idea for a technology based solution that solves a real-world issue for people. In January, we submitted our idea of CycleSense, which is a unique period tracker. CycleSense is a device, which measures the concentration of progesterone in the user’s saliva via sensors and a test strip. This data is then paired with AI through the CycleSense app in order to accurately predict the start of the user’s next menstrual cycle.

The idea stemmed from personal experiences with existing period trackers on the market. They are purely software-based, meaning they make baseless, generic predictions about when a woman’s period will start. Through market research, we found that millions around the world struggle with irregular periods, especially teenagers, perimenopausal women and women with health conditions, such as endometriosis. The uncertainty around when their menstrual cycle starts causes a fear of leaking and a waste of sanitary products. An unexpected period can also force a change of plans, such as not going swimming on holiday or wearing light-coloured clothing. These problems inspired us to consider how we could personalise period tracking to save women from the stresses of an irregular cycle. Hence, CycleSense was created.

Measuring hormones through saliva testing is not a new invention. In fact, there are many products out there that make use of this concept to track ovulation, helping couples who are trying for a baby. However, no-one has applied these techniques to simply help women know when their period will start. This gap in the market highlights a lack of research and investment in women’s health, making us realise that a product like CycleSense could make a huge positive impact for people.

The School enjoyed another excellent Sports Day on Friday. Warm conditions and a gentle breeze were welcomed by athletes and spectators alike, with a pleasing number of parents taking the opportunity to see the action.

The full-day programme was packed, with the Track & Field as ever taking centre-stage. Several new records were broken, especially in the High Jump, where the move to the artificial cricket net surface seemed popular with the athletes - Josh Jukes (1.61), Victor W(1.65) and Toby G(1.81) all soared over the previous best performances. For star-man Toby, this was particularly impressive given he was trying to save energy for the South-East Regional Schools' Combined Events competition the next day (he came second in a new School record).

On the track, all eyes were on the 300m: Joe O(39.6) and Arthur M(38.2) both succeeded in their record-breaking quests, the latter delighted to take the record from his older brother Stan!

Overall, Morgan House romped home with a fairly clear victory - at least compared to the (controversially) close results of recent years!

Well done to all competitors and many thanks to all who helped in any way to make the day a success.

The leading athletes now turn their attention to the National Cup Final in Chelmsford this coming Saturday.

After their 10 wicket victory in the Kent Cup Final on Tuesday 17th June against Kent College, the U15s were given the opportunity to represent Kent in the ESCA U15 T20 Competition.

They were drawn in the preliminary round against Dulwich College which was played on Monday 23rd June - the winners due to travel to Brighton Aldridge Community Academy the following day. Judd began in the field and started the match well, taking wickets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th overs of the match with excellent spells by Aleeyan Akber and Campbell South. Dulwich reached the half-way point of their innings with the score 31-6. Some great fielding prevented the visiting from reaching the boundary (only twice from overs 10-20) and regular wickets throughout left the home side requiring 79 runs in reply with Aleeyan taking 4 wickets in the process.

Much like the Kent Cup Final, the innings began with Amrit Gupta and Agi Sarkar at the crease. Both were able to find the boundary with much more ease than the Dulwich team, taking the score to 42 before the first wicket fell in the 5th over. Hugo Read then came to the crease and with 21 runs in just 10 balls faced took Judd over the line and into the Regional Quarter Final.

The following day, the team left school with high spirits and arrived at an unseasonably cloudy Brighton ground with rain falling. The boys were lucky to enjoy some warm-up practice in Aldridge Community Academy’s indoor net facilities until the weather had passed. Losing the toss, Judd were once again sent into the field where BACA began well. Conceding 30 runs off the first 21 balls, it was Aleeyan combining with a sensational catch from Campbell for the initial break-through. With tight bowling spells from both Hugo and Agi to follow, a couple of wickets going to Mayank Mahesh and a couple of run-outs from Eddie O’Brien, the home team finished their 20 overs on 107.

Amrit set the innings up, taking the first over in response for 16 runs. His score of 38 off 25, helping the chase up to 76 off just 8 overs meaning that Hugo could help see off the chase in an efficient manner with Judd winning by 6 wickets and 8 overs to spare.

So on to “Finals Day”. The team were in the school bus at 7:30am to travel to Hutton CC in Brentwood where they would meet the winners of the Essex Cup in the Regional Semi Final, Brentwood School. Our hour-long journey compared to the oppositions’ 5 minutes down the road could have been a determining factor in the result of the match.

Each athlete competed in two events but notable performances included a school record for Victor in the HJ (1m 62), a remarkable 1500m in the blistering heat (4.31) by Sebby , Cheetan ran a superb 200 (25.3), an excellent double discus / 800 for Daniel to name a few. The inters qualified in 4th place in a display where nearly every event for Judd for a seasons or personal best. Toby led the team with outstanding high jumping (1m87) and constant motivation for the team. Josh ran a gutsy 800 despite sickness but like the junior team, it was a real team effort, with everyone contributing brilliantly.

Our U15 cricket team played the final of the U15 Kent T20 Cup vs Kent College on Tuesday 17th June at Linton Park Cricket Club.

After losing the toss on a warm afternoon under clear skies, the U15 team bowled first. With one side of the boundary being just past the 30 yard circle and the other side of similar length to some professional cricket grounds, the boys stuck to their plans. Opening the bowling with Harry and Seb followed by Hugo and Aleeyan, they restricted Kent College early on. At the drinks break in the first innings - after the first wicket was taken with a great grab by Pedri on the boundary - Kent College were at 56-1 off 9.1 overs. With just over 10 overs left, the potential of a late flourish with the bat meant the team had to rotate their bowlers so the batters couldn't settle. The fielding display meant that Kent College were only able to extract 9 boundaries in their completed innings. Further wickets from Campbell, Aleeyan and Mayank saw Kent College fall to 87-4 off 15 overs. Hugo then followed up with 2 wickets in an over and with Campbell's spell ending with a run out (Aleeyan's throw to Eddie) and another catch on the edge of the ring, Kent College completed their innings at 111-9 off 20 overs.

This event is a fantastic opportunity for them to demonstrate and deepen their existing chemistry knowledge, hone their analytical skills, and showcase their aptitude for practical science. The challenges are always engaging, focusing on relevant societal or industrial problems through hands-on analytical experiments. This year, our students went head-to-head with teams from comparable West Kentschools, undertaking a series of analytical challenges that supported the Department for Housing. We are thrilled to announce that Abhay Chimmalgi, Joe Edwards, and Spencer Burgess emerged victorious from a group of 10 teams! This marks a historic first win for The Judd School in this competition. Well done to them all!

On the 8th of May, author Seth Insua visited the school, kindly offering himself up for discussion with a group of students interested in English. As an old Juddian, Seth spoke about his transition from Judd to Oxford (where he read English) and how this gradually led him to write his first book. ‘Human, Animal’ was released in February and is Seth’s debut novel; he spoke in depth about his writing process and what sparked the idea for the book; as well as offering insight on the behind-the-scenes of getting a book published. At the end, there was time to ask questions and there were final discussions on Seth’s previous work on a graphic novel, and the pressures of going from studying the greats to writing his own work. The talk was a great opportunity to learn about becoming an author and about ‘Human, Animal’ and Seth’s plans for future releases. - B. Gillam y12

Over 20 students delivered engaging four-minute science presentations, with a panel of judges selecting the winners.

We are delighted to share that James (Y7) and Sai (Y8) were awarded first and second prize respectively in the Year 11 and below category.

James delivered an outstanding presentation on induced pluripotent stem cells—a talk that would rival many Sixth Form students in both scientific accuracy and clarity. His sleek slides, combined with a confident and fluent delivery, truly impressed the judges and earned him a well-deserved first place.

Sai’s presentation explored the benefits of eating with your hands, taking a scientific concept and making it both informative and highly entertaining. His poise and clear communication secured him a strong second place.

They used the microscope to capture stunning, high-resolution images of a variety of objects they had chosen in advance. Their samples included a butterfly wing, a bee's mouth and eyes, an ant’s head, copper sulfate crystals, and a feather - revealing intricate structures invisible under an optical microscope.

Organised by The Queen’s College, University of Oxford, this prestigious national competition invites students to engage with translation in a creative and thoughtful way.

All students in the French department participated, working hard to translate a French text into English. More than just a literal translation, the challenge lies in capturing the tone, level, register, and even the rhymes of the original – a true test of both language skill and creativity.

Being part of the Spamalot musical last week was a brilliant experience. Performing in both shows was incredibly fun and rewarding, especially knowing how much effort everyone put into making it happen. Over the past few weeks, the cast, chorus, orchestra, and teachers sacrificed our normal routines (and quite a few lessons!) for rehearsals filled with singing, dancing, and plenty of silly jokes. It was certainly a long and tiring week at the River Centre—an excellent venue for the performances—but it was fully worth it to feel the support of our audiences and to see everyone involved enjoying themselves. It’s safe to say I can hardly wait for the next musical!

(Luca, Year 9)

A huge thanks to all the students and staff who contributed to the success of Spamalot! From knights who say "Ni!" to show-stopping musical numbers, the cast, crew, and band brought infectious energy and humour to the stage. It was wonderful to see so many students involved, and we’re incredibly proud of what they achieved. Thank you also to all the parents who supported behind the scenes—we hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did!

On Saturday the 1st XI played in their second consecutive White Cup final in Kent. After some battling performances to get there and a long coach drive to Herne Bay the team found themselves 2-0 down in just 5 minutes. But once again they battled back, Harry forcing the keeper into some saves and going close multiple times. George then headed in from a corner to half the deficit. Josh then made some excellent saves to keep it 2-1 going into half time. The pattern continued into the second half, Judd mostly on top but Maidstone countering. Stan was denied a well worked goal by an excellent save by their keeper before Maidstone scored from a corner of their own. Once again the 1st XI didn't lie down, and with 4 minutes to go Toba bundled one in to make it a grandstand finish. As Judd threw men forward in pursuit of an equaliser Maidstone broke and scored with pretty much the last kick to run out 4-2 victors.

A brave effort from those involved. Thank you to all who came and supported it really was appreciated! And a thank you to all the Year 13s who played and have played throughout the years. They have embodied the rise of football at Judd since it was introduced back in Year 7.

At the campsite was the title of this year's play performed for year 9 and year 10 German learners. Now an annual tradition the visiting native speaker actors played out the chaotic events surrounding the visit to a campsite of two friends, an experienced camper and a complete novice. With able support from two year 10 students who took the role of German speaking English campers the audience enjoyed watching the actors deal with terrible showers, a lack of food, a surfeit of clothes and the unavailability of power points to plug in a hair dryer. Students had spent a lesson prior to this catching up on the vocab needed to ensure their understanding and enjoying the faux falsetto voices employed by some students when acting out the roles of the two female participants in this sorry saga. The boys probably enjoyed their time at the campsite more than the actresses!

With thanks to our supporting cast, the enthusiastic audience participation and the German department for organising this dramatic and comedic tour de force!
