Bethan Thomas - Head Girl 

When I first arrived at Judd last September, I was unsure of what to expect. I was very aware of the school’s reputation for academic excellence and outstanding results, but leaving my previous school also meant leaving behind some of my closest friends and the familiar routines I had grown accustomed to. I arrived with a mixture of nerves and excitement, with the hope that this new environment would challenge me, help me grow, and give me the opportunity to become the best version of myself.

From my very first day, I was met with academic challenge, kindness and warmth. The connections I made with those around me made my transition incredibly smooth, allowing me to push myself out of my comfort zone and explore new interests with the support of my teachers and classmates. At the heart of the Judd experience are three simple but powerful words: Learn, Grow, Belong.

Learn
Academic excellence is undoubtedly at the forefront of life at Judd, and it is a key part of the school’s incredible examination results. However, learning here extends far beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to be curious, to ask questions and to immerse themselves in their education.

From having in depth conversations and studies in the classroom to exploring new ideas in academic societies. Judd encourages students to develop a genuine enthusiasm for learning. It is a place where you are challenged to think independently, to question what you know and to discover what you are capable of.

Grow
Judd also provides an enormous range of opportunities for students to discover new interests, develop their talents and challenge themselves in different ways. From sport and music to academic societies, volunteering and leadership, there is something for everyone.

As part of the Head Prefect team, we are particularly keen to encourage students to make the most of these opportunities and to increase participation across both academic and social activities. We believe that friendly competition can be an important part of personal growth, while also bringing people together.

Whether it is taking part in House Singing, competing on Sports Day or getting involved in charity events such as Culture Day, these experiences create memories that extend far beyond the classroom. They allow students to build confidence, resilience and leadership skills, while developing a greater sense of responsibility towards those around them.

Belong
Perhaps most importantly, Judd is a community. The opportunities, traditions and achievements of the school are made meaningful by the people within it.

I have come to realise that belonging does not necessarily mean knowing everyone or being involved in everything. Sometimes, it is as simple as having someone to sit with at lunch, a teacher who believes in your potential, or a friend who encourages you to get involved in something new.

Judd has taught me that ambition and empathy can go hand in hand. It is a place where students are encouraged to strive for excellence while also supporting one another, celebrating each other’s successes and helping each other through challenges.

As Head Girl, I want to help build on this sense of belonging. I hope to encourage more students to get involved, to try something they might not normally consider and to recognise that every individual has something valuable to contribute to our community. 

Looking back on my first day at Judd, I could never have imagined how quickly this school would become such an important part of my life. Judd has challenged me academically, encouraged me to grow personally and, most importantly, given me a community in which I feel I belong.

I am incredibly proud to call myself a Juddian and I hope that I am able to support you during my time at Judd.

The Judd School is a place where students are encouraged to fulfil their potential, guided by teachers who truly enjoy their subjects and strive to light that same spark of interest in their students.

What I think makes a Judd education particularly valuable is the freedom students are given to take their interests beyond what is taught in the classroom. A question raised in a lesson can become a wider fascination; a passing interest can become a new passion; and an opportunity can lead somewhere entirely unexpected. The encouragement to think independently, ask questions and pursue what genuinely interests you is something I have valued greatly throughout my time here. Judd gives you the knowledge to build on, but also the confidence and curiosity to decide where you want to take it.

Having joined Judd in Year 7, I have had the privilege to experience the full breadth of what our school has to offer. This includes the academic opportunities for which Judd is well known: from mathematics competitions and Medical Society presentations to fascinating experiments in the laboratory. But some of the most valuable parts of my time here have come from the pursuits beyond the classroom.

Whether through sport, music, societies, trips, competitions or simply the friendships formed along the way, there is an extraordinary range of ways to become involved in school life. I was fortunate enough to receive an organ scholarship in Year 8, something which opened doors to experiences I could never have imagined when I first arrived. For someone else, it might be a sport, a society, an instrument, a competition or something they have not even discovered yet.

That is one of the things that makes The Judd School special: there is no single way to be a Juddian. You are encouraged to discover what interests you, to challenge yourself and to make the most of opportunities when they arise. Just as importantly, you are surrounded by people who are willing to support you along the way.
To everyone joining Judd this year, welcome. I hope that you find here not only a place to learn but a place to grow, to discover what you are capable of and ultimately, to belong.
