The award was set up in memory of Bernice McCabe who passed away in 2019 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. As well as being Headmistress of North London Collegiate School for over 20 years, Bernice was Co-Director of The Prince’s Teaching Institute (now known as the PTI), where her vision helped create a network of teachers, departments and schools focused on promoting subject rigour and depth, enhancing teachers’ subject knowledge, encouraging subject related extra-curricular activities, and establishing links between and within schools.
