Rugby
Overview
Rugby at Judd combines tradition, opportunity, and excellence. With full boys' and girls' fixture lists against top schools like Tonbridge and RGS Guildford. All pupils from A to G teams at junior level, to senior squads, have the chance to represent the school and play all forms of the game, contact and non-contact.
Recent Achievements
In 2023, Judd made history by winning all three Kent 15-a-side County titles (U14, U15, U18). In 2024, we are U13 VIIs and U14 XVs champions, U18 Quadruple Kent Merit League & Champions Cup winners, runners-up in the National State School XVs, and regional finalists in both U15 and U16 national cups.
Our 7s teams have won the Kent, Dulwich, Berkhamsted, and John Fisher tournaments, with U13s previous National Champions at RP7s and U16s twice All England 7s winners. We've won the U14 Kent Cup 11 times in 20 years, with past highlights including the National Schools Bowl (2019) and a Twickenham final in the Daily Mail Cup (2009).
Touring
Rugby tours are a Judd tradition - Inter & Senior squads travel biennially to New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Italy, Ireland and South America. The season ends with our showcase varsity match before the spring 7s circuit. We continue to offer Rugby support throughout the Academic year.
Player Development & Alumni Success
Many Judd players gon on to county, regional and national honours. Recent alumni include Angus Hall (England U20s & Saracens 1st XV), Tom Kendrick (Tonbridge Juddians), Luke Baldwin (Dragons), and Alex Everett (Captain of Cornish Pirates).
Our thriving girls' programme was a Sponsored Team at the 2024 National 7s and featured on the 2025 event cover - a clear sign of Judd's commitment to rugby for all.
Rugby Coaching
Our rugby department operates through our curriculum, clubs and games programmes. Staff work collaboratively to deliver comprehensive player development, safety, and sporting excellence, streaming by ability, task and format throughout. Run, catch, pass & evasion skills are taught to all, with contact confidence offered to most, dependent on preference.
Strength of staff and parental support are the pillars of our programme. We have both full-time and part-time teachers/coaches that offer vast rugby expertise and experience. Our staff include Professionals, International, Academy, County, Club and School experience. This allows us to provide a programme that focuses on technical skill development, tactical understanding, and leadership through both team and personalised training, video analysis, and position-specific instruction across all ability levels.
Our Exam PE Programme, Gym and Off-site Flootlit 3G facilities enable us to provide training, information and services that promote injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimistation through fitness assessments strength conditioning, nutrition education, match-day medical care and weekly physio triage.
Judd Rugby Values
Our rugby programme ensures adherence to rugby's core values of integrity, respect, and fair play through proactive education, behavioural standards, and supportive intervention when needed.
The departments' collaborative approach ensures coaching strategies align with our school ethos and development goals, sport science insights inform training decisions, and discipline standards are consistently maintained, creating a holistic rugby experience that develops both skilled players and good principled individuals. We believe there is real value in our long-standing rugby programme and we are proud to maintain our Rugby Football Sporting Culture.
